Through the Eyes of a Child

Tonight, while I was making dinner Isabelle was looking out the window and shouted, “Mamma, I see the moon!” I, of course, just say something like “Uh huh” or “That’s nice” while continuing on with whatever I was doing at the time. She then yelled “Henry! Henry! Come look, you can see the MOON!!” I stopped for a minute and thought “Why is she so excited about the stupid moon?” No, the moon never did anything to me and I really have no right to call it stupid but that’s what I thought. Then it dawned on me that she doesn’t remember really seeing it before. My kids are all in bed by 7:30pm so before the daylight savings switch they never really saw it get that dark. I know, I know, I’m raising kids who are excited to see the moon; clearly we don’t get out much! After dinner, all five of us headed outside to stand in our front yard to check out the moon (the neighbors probably thought we were crazy). The boys lost interest (if indeed they ever had any) after about a minute but Isabelle and I stayed outside for a while. She was so excited to look at the moon and see the stars that she could have stayed out there for hours. Now I can’t remember the last time that I stopped to take a minute to look up at the moon or the stars, but I did tonight. I looked at them with my four year old and through her eyes and they were indeed a bit magical.
