Who is that Kid??

As parents we see our children everyday so we often don’t notice how much they have changed.  It’s the same as if you see a friend regularly and you don’t notice they’ve lost weight. However, if you don’t see a friend for a few months and bump in to them you immediately notice the change. Every once in a while I have a moment where I look at a picture of one of the kids and I think “When did (s)he get SO big?” Last night I met a couple of girlfriends out for dinner. It was 3 moms with our combined 8 kids and miraculously we had a fabulous time. All the kids were well behaved, everyone was happy, and it was cheap thanks to dollar burger night and half price apps.  While we were there I snapped a quick picture of Daniel enjoying his ice cream sundae. I didn’t look at the picture until today and this is what I saw…

Ummm…who is this kid? Where is my baby? When did he get all that hair? When did he turn from a chubby baby in to this BOY? I don’t get it. Didn’t I just have him? It is so crazy how fast the time goes by. Don't blink.

The Worries of Parenthood

One of the “joys” of parenting is constant worrying. When we don’t have to worry about things like food, water, shelter, and health we take it upon ourselves to broaden the spectrum. Is she smart enough? Does he have enough friends? Is she tall enough? Will people like him? The list goes on and on. Now most people who know me know that I’m not a big worrier. That being said, it’s impossible to not let the worry woes enter my mind at some times.  I have three children who are very different from each other so the worries vary.

Isabelle is four years old but is smart beyond her years. She yearns for knowledge. She spends her nights writing her letters, begging me to spell every word possible for her, and nagging us to play number games with her. She remembers everything and articulates things better than most grade schoolers. She will sit and color, paint, or do crafts meticulously for hours. Isabelle is a planner and a rule follower. Sounds perfect, right?  Well I worry that her obsession with right and wrong will lead her to always be the tattle tale. I worry that she’s not easy going enough.

Henry is three years old and as sweet as they come. He will happily play in the corner with a rock and a paperclip for hours. He lives in a make believe world full of dinosaurs and bad guys. He has an imaginary dog who is also a super hero (“Super Doggy”) who flies next to our car when we are out and about. He is a no muss, no fuss kind of kid. He is also completely clueless. He can’t follow simple directions to save his life. At the rate he’s going, he may never be potty trained. He uses imaginary words that normal people don’t understand. I worry that he spends too much time playing alone. I worry that he will scare potential new friends away by his constant talk about ghosts and monsters. I worry that he’s too laid back and that he doesn’t fight back enough.

Daniel is twenty months old and a bulldozer. He is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He is charming and sweet one minute and hitting and throwing toys at your head the next. He is smart – smart enough to carefully plan his attacks against his siblings. He is a Mamma’s Boy and a dare devil. I worry that while I am ignoring him on a fussy day that he actually has an ear infection. I worry that each day is the day that he will fall down the entire flight of stairs. I worry that he doesn’t share enough and uses his strength to get his way too often.

Those are just a few of my worries, but really when all is said and done I know that it will work out. I envision Isabelle and another little OCD girl sitting doing long division together while discussing all the naughty things other kids in class did that day. I envision Henry and another little boy wearing capes and running around the backyard chasing ghosts with sticks. I envision Daniel (inevitably with a limb in a cast) with another little boy throwing rocks at trees and planning world domination. Things won’t always be easy. Kids can be mean and childhood can be tough. But when all is said and done, I know they’ll each find one friend who will help them through it all. In the meantime, I’m going to go start collecting resumes from kids at the playground to fill the open positions.

"Don't worry, Mom. We've got this!"

"No" never sounded so good

Daniel (20 months) has been busting out new words left and right for the last couple of weeks. Since he's rather late to the talking party, we are pretty excited about it - even if his new favorite word is "no"!

PS - Toddler + Sticky Fingers + Always Touching Everything = Blurry Lens. Sorry!

An Egg-cellent Morning

The kids and I headed out this morning for a town egg hunt. There were lots of kids, lots of candy, lots of smiles, and Isabelle got to have her picture taken with the Easter Bunny. What more could you ask for?

Waiting patiently for the hunt!
Henry showing off his candy
Daniel learned that Starbursts aren't that yummy with the wrapper still on.

"Where is Heaven?"

Yesterday, while in the car, Isabelle asked, “Where is Heaven?” It came out of nowhere since we hadn’t been talking about anything around the subject any time recently. Whenever one of these big life questions comes up, I feel like I always have no idea what to say. So I answered by saying that it’s up in the sky above the clouds. She then followed it by asking “How do you get to Heaven?” I really had a tough time coming up with an answer to this one on the spot. So I said when you are sick or there’s an accident, God decides it’s time for you to join him and you go up to Heaven. Apparently, I shouldn’t have stressed about this answer because her follow up question of “Do you climb a ladder to get there?” made it clear that she literally meant how do you get there. I should have remembered that I was dealing with a four year old who was thinking of how to physically get above the clouds and not someone looking for a big meaningful talk about God! She went for totally gut wrenching with the next question of, “What do you think your Mom is doing in Heaven?” Isabelle was only one when my mother died so she doesn’t remember her, but we talk about her often and we bring flowers to the cemetery. So I told her that Grammy is doing all the things she loves, eating her favorite foods, watching over us, and loving us from Heaven. She seemed pleased with this answer and all in all I think the talk went well (I also struggled when she asked if there were kids in Heaven). I love that she is curious and that she wants to know more about life, death, and all that comes in between. Sometimes I just wish that I had more time to think up the answers!

How do you handle the rough questions?

Turn left at the second cloud and Heaven will be on your right.

Our New (Unwanted) Alarm Clock

For most, the first signs of spring are warmer weather and budding flowers. However, for us the true sign that spring has arrived is a special, little, noisy visitor that comes around each year – a woodpecker. Now before moving to this house, I had no idea how noisy a woodpecker could be or how stubborn. Each morning around 6am we have this one woodpecker who comes and LOUDLY drills on our metal gutters. It sounds like a jackhammer outside our window. It is seriously SO loud. One of us then goes outside to scare him away and he looks down at us with a look of annoyance that we would dare yell at him while he is happily doing his morning ritual. Our loud yelling and shooing at him does nothing and we then have to throw something up at him to get him to go away. When this first started happening, I thought that we just had a really dumb bird land on our house and didn’t realize he should be drilling on wood. Nope, turns out he knows exactly what he is doing and the loud noise is what he uses to attract a mate and claim his territory. Doesn’t this horny, territorial bird know that if I am lucky enough to still have my kids in bed at 6am that I don’t want to be in my jammies throwing random objects at him? If it’s not one thing, it’s another, right?!

It Took Almost 20 Months but We Have Words!

As many of you know, Daniel is large and in charge but has been pretty quiet up until now. He has only said “uh oh,” “ho ho ho (as in Santa),” and “ball.”  For being (almost) twenty months old and only having these few words, the doctor has been encouraging me to have him evaluated for speech therapy I haven’t done it though because I’m not a worry wart and feel that he will talk when he’s ready. Well I’m happy to report that it appears that he is ready! Just within the last week, he has been popping out all kinds of new words.  He’s now added Dadda, bus, peekaboo, backpack, more, car, hi, and bye. Pretty much each day a new word is coming out and he is using them often and frequently.  I also have to say that he looks so ridiculously cute frantically waiving out the window and yelling “hi” at anyone that walks by that it was totally worth the wait!
